Mexico; Navy may assume coast guard duties

The Government of Mexico has sent a bill to the Congress of the Union to expand the functions of the Mexican Navy and empower it to carry out tasks more typical of a coast guard. In the so-called Organic Law of the Navy of Mexico it is proposed to include as a new attribution of the armed institute “to support the Secretariat of the Navy in its functions as National Maritime Authority”

If the project presented by the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador is approved, the Navy will be responsible for maritime and port security and protection, as well as actions for the control of maritime traffic in general water communication routes, “at all times that it has the means and attributions related to said functions “.

This initiative of the Mexican Executive is related to another, already approved by Congress, which made Semar the only National Maritime Authority in charge of the implementation of the Navigation and Maritime Commerce Law.

In this way, Semar became the only institution capable of granting permits for the establishment and operation of services related to maritime communications and transport and the conduct of policies and programs in the matter.
